Aftermath

By Helene - Last updated: Thursday, February 3, 2011

The high tide this morning meant there was a likelihood of some low-level flooding in Cairns. I believe Machans Beach saw water over its rock wall. At Trinity the waves were chaotic, but they only delivered sand higher up the beaches. I think the Life Guard Hut will still be there tomorrow Vasey Esplanade was [...]

And the sun rises after Yasi

By Helene - Last updated: Thursday, February 3, 2011

Trinity Beach seems to have survived Cyclone Yasi with minimal damage. There’s a lot of vegetation down, some awnings missing, broken fences and debris everywhere, but the sea hasn’t inundated any of the low lying areas. We still have power and, more amazingly, phone and internet. Friends higher up the hill slopes of Trinity Beach [...]

And so it continues

The plants are in – who knew we had so many… The glass pool fence is wrapped up like a giant Christmas present and I’ve just been on mid-west NSW ABC radio chatting about Yasi!

Family

My elderly mum (she’s 88!) is visiting from Brisbane. She was unwell at the start of the year and couldn’t be in Cairns for the launch of Border Watch. I missed having her there as she and Dad were so integral in developing my love of books and writing. Today we had coffee at Glaskins [...]

Trinity Picininis

There’s something very engaging about small children intent on their artwork. A tongue sticking out of the corner of a mouth, the furrowed forehead of concentration, the tunnel vision required to get that curved line just right. So absorbed are they, you can speak to them and they don’t hear you. It’s not that they [...]

The New Heart of Trinity Beach

By Helene - Last updated: Saturday, April 3, 2010

With such wonderful generous hosts at ‘glaskins gallery‘ the celebrations for Border Watch were a huge success. Many people asked me afterwards about the gallery and the inspiration behind it so I’ve asked Garry to contribute something to my blog each month. I figure we’d better start with the main man himself. Let me introduce [...]

Golden flashes of sun

By Helene - Last updated: Friday, March 26, 2010

There’s something so joyous in an animated discussion between a pair of sunbirds that I have to smile. These tiny northern-dwelling honey-eaters are happiest nesting as close to humans as they can reasonably manage – including building their homes hanging off the centre piece of a wind-chime… How’s that for thrill seeking? Like so many [...]

Thomas Storrie

By Helene - Last updated: Thursday, February 25, 2010

Today I’m featuring another talented exhibitor at Glaskins Gallery. Please welcome Thomas Storrie. Like Tanya, Thomas found his artistic ability at a young age. At school he excelled at arts, graphics and most things to do with using his hands. He went on to complete a Diploma of Visual arts at Central Gippsland Institute of [...]

GLASKINS GALLERY

By Helene - Last updated: Sunday, February 21, 2010

It all started when I decided I needed to have a party to thank friends and family for supporting me on the journey to publication. Usually a party in Trinity Beach involves staking out of the public BBQs on Vasey Eslpanade  at sunrise, to ward off anyone else wanting to get their snags cooked to [...]

Sunrise, sunrise

I love being home….
