So being grumpy has an upside!

Thanks to my sister, Bron, for forwarding a recent BBC news story (here’s the link : BBC Article) about a new study into grumpiness. (I love the way a researcher in NSW can end up making headlines in the UK and not get into the news in Oz – go figure…)

Anyway, one of the findings in the study is that those who are grumpy are ‘better at making decisions, and less gullible’. Those cheery soul amongst us are likely to be more creative, but then the grumps will pay more attention to detail.

The conclusion (and advice) from my sister is that I should edit on grumpy days and write on cheerful days! I may end up being very light on editing if I take that approach…

I’m also not sure what conclusions I should draw from the study re my day job? Does it mean that when I come to work to check someone in the simulator if I’m happy I’ll tell them a story? Or that, if I’m grumpy, they better beware because I will be watching out for every little slip and lapse??

If that’s the case, please don’t tell my boss because I’m sure he’d expect me to be grumpy every day… 🙂

  1. Right now I’d love to BE in the Whitsunday’s. It is freezing in Melbourne. I swear I saw a penguin walk down the street wearing a fur coat:)

  2. Hey Helene, Just got home and had to share: we were lucky enough to encounter a pod of dolphins on the way home, so we stopped and hung out with them for a few minutes. Lucky, lucky, lucky us! 🙂

  3. Hey Sandy, I can’t imagine you getting grumpy! Hope you’ve had a lovely day on the boat – there’s nothing like the open water for clarity of writing.

I loved the two weeks we had last year in the Whitsunday Islands – very productive!!

  4. Hi Helene,

Hope you have a nice day flying. I have to admit that I generally only get grumpy when I can’t get the peace and quiet I need to write. Ah well, we’re off in the boat today – bought a new four-stroke engine so we’re taking her out for a run. I’m writing a rather complicated scene at the moment that’s getting a bit confusing so maybe a bit of sea air flowing through my hair will help sort that out.
Lunch on the beach – can’t beat it.
