NaNoWriMo and other matters

Oh my what a month it’s been… Apologies to those that thought I’d vanished off the face of the planet, but November is not about growing a moustache for me (I don’t plan on entering the Guinness book of records for facial hair feats…)it’s about writing 50,000 words. Every year for the past four years I’ve had a go at completing the NaNo challenge.

This year has been problematic. First my work roster was full. Then my husband was inconsiderate enough to have a birthday slap bang in the middle of November. This year his present was going to see Leonard Cohen perform live in Hobart. All very lovely, but I hadn’t really accounted for the two days we’d spend travelling from one end of the country to the other and back again. Hobart welcomed us with open arms but was a little chilly… Leonard was divine πŸ™‚

Then there were additional edits to Shattered Sky. A huge thank you to Rachael for her input – it was timely and spot on.

This weekend started early Saturday in Mackay on the end of a two day ‘milk run’, segued through our company christmas party, a friend’s fortieth, and a leisurely breakfast with my husband this morning to recover. Β All in all, I’m still 25,000 words short with 9 days to go…

That means head down and keep tapping, so expect to hear from me late November when I’ll either have a champagne in my hand to celebrate or blisters on my fingers from typing so fast πŸ™‚ Or maybe even both!

  1. Sshh, don’t let Zeus find out he’s NOT a muscled mastiff. He has no idea he’s a short nuggety little rock… ‘small man’ syndrome, I suspect πŸ™‚

  2. Nope, my late cat was Nigel and he had a distinct personality. If I ever get another cat he or she will be abother tabby and Nigel or Nigella.

I must admit that Zeaus would be more apporpriate foir some sort of large mastiff, like Hagrid’s dog.

  3. Lol, Cathy!!

Zeus is the staffy, but he was so named because he has delusions of grandeur, which all really means I probably need that good shrink… Apportioning personalities to pets ??? Sigh… perhaps it’s just an overactive imagination:-)

  4. Helene, I assume Zeus is the dog?, and not the being who lives on Olympus. If the second, I know a really good shrink πŸ™‚

  5. That’s it, Sandy! I cycle to the golf driving range and meet GW there. Hell of a headwind in, but we flew home πŸ™‚

And your one thousand words will be considered, precisely placed ones. My eight thousand are more like ‘stream of consciousness’ type stuff…

  6. Wadyamean, half way to Cairns? Oh, I get it, from the beaches. Duh!

Eight thousand words huh? – and I was so impressed with my one thousand today. Well done you.:)

  7. Oh yay!!! An eight thousand word day!!! Off to ride the bike half way to Cairns to meet hubbie on the way home. I doubt I’ll feel any pain at all πŸ™‚

  8. Thanks for the timely reminder Cathy and Sandy! You can consider this my ‘breathing stop’! I had a lovely walk on the beach this morning with Zeus before I got stuck into writing again. It was a beautiful way to start the day.

Hi Fiona, hopefully I’ll get to my goal, but if I don’t then at least I’ll have the backbone of the book in place. And yes, it’s still set in Border Watch with Lauren and Morgan working alongside Kaitlyn to track down arsonists. Kaitlyn get her romance this time round πŸ™‚

  9. Keep going Helene! You can do it. I’m at the 40k mark but have given myself till end of Feb to finish. I hope what you’re wrighting will be a fab book 3 on our shelves soon. Will it link back to some of the same crew?? I wish they would put SS out sooner lol!!

  10. I don’t know how you do it, Helene! I shake my head in awe of your abilities – not to mention stamina.

And what Cathy said – breathe! πŸ™‚

  11. Lol, Sonya, a white Christmas in Australia is pretty special! And v jealous- you’ll be there for the finish of the Sydney to Hobart yacht race…

The first half of next year should see a stack more Australian books on the shelf for you!

  12. Hobart had better warm up – we’re heading down there for Christmas! (I’m planning to forget the fact it snowed there at Christmas a few years ago.)

Please write faster. I’m suffering from Australian author withdrawal and it’s not nice.

  13. Hi Fleur, I’ve definitely been in lurking mode, but even forty thousand will make me happy. Both Border Watch and Shattered Sky took shape in a NaNo event πŸ™‚
