Perfect Past

On a recent visit to my mum’s house I tried to find my copy of Pookie the White Rabbit – my favourite children’s book. Unfortunately it seems to have vanished, but the top shelf in my old cupboard turned up some classics. It seems I was destined to write Romantic Suspense (and fly aircraft) from an early age…

That set me wondering. Are the genres you read as a child or teenager still the ones you come back to, like comfort food, to cheer you up on rainy days or transport you out of the chaos of life? Have you changed your genre during your life or have you just expanded your list?

Could, of course, be that I’m being too philosophical…

The end of page editing is in sight, and NaNo is calling, so I may be procrastinating as well 🙂

  1. I also read all of the war comics, you know, those British ones. Also read Mary Grant Bruce, and an Aussie series about the Flying Doctor Service, I remember the aircraft was a DH Drover and the pilot had served with Bomber Command in ww2.

Alexander Kent (Dougls Reeman) when I was 15., and I am still reading him, Could never stand Hornblower, but I love Kent’s Richard Bolitho.

Adored the Biggles books, evenb if I feel that the Se5 was the better plane than the Camel

  2. Oooh yes, the Silver Brumby series! I also devoured the My Friend Flicka series, which at the time I didn’t realise was already vintage…

And The Hobbit was another favourite 🙂

  3. Ah, comics, now there’re some memories! 🙂 My faves were Casper the Friendly Ghost and Wendy the Witch.
I’ve still got a big book of Grimm’s Fairy Tales that I poured over as a kid. Then went on to read The Pony Club books and Australian author Elyne Mitchell’s Silver Brumby series and of course the Black Stallion by Walter Farley. In fact, I was only thinking recently I should re-read them all.

  4. Never read the ANNE books, although I did see the Disney telemovies. Read Biggles and Worrals, read the “Katie” books, Tom Sawyer, Huck Finn (in fact Tom Sawyer wea the first program I saw on TV in 1963 when Picton, Nz finally got TV): read all of the Arthur Ransome books, Rosemary Sutcliffe, Bobbsey Twins, Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew, Tom Swift.

Also the comics, “Jinty” was one but the british boys comics such as “Lion” and Eagle” also
