Time to give

The best part of Christmas is book shopping. Today was no exception!

I’ve come home laden down with wonderful new stories and I’m only sorry I can’t read them all before I give them away… That would be wrong wouldn’t it… Still it would be nice… Ok, ok, I’ll behave…. promise…

So, here’s the list. Have you read any of them? What’s on your list for Christmas?

THE HAPPIEST REFUGEE by Anh Do (2 copies of that one!) Anh Do nearly didn’t make it to Australia. His entire family came close to losing their lives on the sea as they escaped from war-torn Vietnam in an overcrowded boat. But nothing – not murderous pirates, nor the imminent threat of death by hunger, disease or dehydration as they drifted for days – could quench their desire to make a better life in a country where freedom existed.
Life in Australia was hard, an endless succession of back-breaking work, crowded rooms, ruthless landlords and make-do everything. But there was a loving extended family, and always friends and play and something to laugh about for Anh, his brother Khoa and their sister Tram. Things got harder when their father left home when Anh was thirteen – they felt his loss very deeply and their mother struggled to support the family on her own. His mother’s sacrifice was an inspiration to Anh and he worked hard during his teenage years to help her make ends meet, also managing to graduate high school and then university.
Another inspiration was the comedian Anh met when he was about to sign on for a 60-hour a week corporate job. Anh asked how many hours he worked. ‘Four,’ the answer came back, and that was it. He was going to be a comedian!
The Happiest Refugee tells the incredible, uplifting and inspiring life story of one of our favourite personalities. Tragedy, humour, heartache and unswerving determination – a big life with big dreams. Anh’s story will move and amuse all who read it.

Then, as the ship sank to the ocean floor and the passengers slowly died from hypothermia, a deathly silence settled over the sea. Yet the echoes of that night reverberated through the lives of each of the 705 survivors. SURVIVING THE TITANIC tells the extraordinary stories of some of those who survived.

  1. I have always had an intrerest, and in things nautical as well. We owned flats in Picton and one of our tenants when I was grwoing up was Bert Bagget. A master Marin er who died at the age of 108 in 1968. He always saile d in sail, and commaded many crack ships. As a young boy he served as an apprentice under Jospeh Conrad

  2. How fascinating. I didn’t know that. I knew purple was a mourning colour, but I hadn’t thought about the colour beneath the stripes.

I guess your family has always had a keener interest than most in the Titanic, Cathy.

  3. Cancelled the print HADOW OF THE TITANIC and got it on Kindle much cheaper. Did you know that the reason that Mairne Enineer officers (including Flight Engineer) wear purple clothg facin g s under the gfolds stripes on thier uniforms?. Purplwe is the color of “half mourning” and it was decredeed by KIng George in 1913 would be worn in perpetuity by Brish and Commonwealth Maritime engneerin g offices in honor odf the sacrifice of the Tit5anic’s engineers. The connection to Joseph Bell is via my father’s side of the family, by marriage through his mother’s line

  4. The Book Depository is lethal, Sonya! I’ve had to ration myself… Most of my favourite Australian authors aren’t available on the site so that means I buy them from my local bookseller and then other writers from overseas on-line shops.

I do love a soppy Christmas read although I don’t think I’m going to have time this year…

So which good releases are you looking forward to in Jan to March?? Bron Parry’s new one is out in April which I’m hanging out for.

And yes, it’s THE Silver Brumby. I loved it so I’m hoping she will too 🙂

  5. How fascinating, Cathy. The engineers never have much chance in those situations. Dad was a marine engineer and I always remember him saying it was like being a rat in a sewer with no way out…

  6. Hey, hang on. The Silver Brumby as in THE SILVER BRUMBY?! The book every little Australian girl is obsessed with? I’ve never actually read it, though I remember the excitement when the movie came out. I saw a similar horse earlier today and had a Silver Brumby flashback! Must buy it.

  7. The last day for ordering from The Book Depository for Christmas deliveries is Monday! That’s the most important thing for me – books there are about $7 – with free postage – as opposed to the ridiculous prices here in Australia.

Just put in a huge order today!

Everyone in my family is getting books from me this year. I can’t stop buying the things!

In the romance world October and November are pretty bad for books – just lots of cheesy Christmas stories (which I do admit to reading!). However January to March is so exciting. So much great romantic suspense coming out then.

  8. I have ordered SHADOW OF THE TITANIC. I think I have read every book on the sinking (including the US and British enquiries) I am disatatly related to Chief Engineer Joseph Bell. Neither he, nor any of the 36 Engineers escaped.

  9. Lol, Sandy, I hope the little one Thowra is destined to entertain enjoys the story as much as I did!

Sounds like you had a productive day too. And baking next weekend? You are domestic goddess! There’s something warming about receiving a gift that’s been handmade 🙂

  10. Long live Thowra! 🙂

I went shopping with my MIL yesterday and managed to get a few pressies (including my own 🙂 ) Picked up a couple of miniature crystal skulls for a couple of ten-ish boys and a crystal bracelet for little Miss 5s birthday. She’s getting a Kimba t-shirt for Christmas.

The other half already has his pressie. Next weekend I’ll be doing the baking thing with rum balls and biccies to send away to those not so near, but very dear.

  11. Thanks for the list Helene. I just found a couple of lovely and interesting somethings I can’t go past. It’s my birthday next week … Hmmm I may leave hints around the house for my family…
