Hero material

Ok, I’ll admit it. I’m a sucker for a guy who’s good with animals and children.ย One of the highlights of our trip to the UK was seeing GW with our niece, Hannah, and more particularly, our nephew, Jack.

My husband has always maintained he’s allergic to children, but his actions belie that claim. Like most good men he’s only slightly removed from adolescence himself and loves nothing more than playing practical jokes and generally running amok. (If he’d tried letting their air mattress down one more time I think they would have taken serious action against him…)

Jack, though only sixteen, is slightly taller than his uncle and weighs a touch more as he’s a rising athletics star, but in so many other ways they are amazingly similar. GW’s hair may have softened to silver, but he too was a carrot top as a child (indeed when we married!). They walk with the same little wiggle and they looked frighteningly similar dancing to Beyonce on Wii…ย GW’s accent is always broader when he’s back amongst other Mancurians so they sound the same. Although they’ve spent very little time together,ย many of their small mannerisms are similar –ย genetics have a lot to answer for!

Probably one of the most enduring memories for me will be GW and Jack cooking dinner. Being thoroughly modern British guys, the iPad, with Jamie Oliver’s Basic Risotto Recipe, was propped on the counter for guidance:-)

A couple of lads in the kitchen cooking up a storm is always going to make my heart melt. That they produced a delicious risotto was a bonus. Even more special was hearing last night that Jack cook risotto for dinner for his Mum over the weekend. Champion!!

The hero in my current WIP is a good cook. Art imitating life perhaps? Is the ability to cook a prerequisite hero quality for you?

And Jamie Oliver’s Basic Risotto Recipe was their inspiration.

  1. And GW was wearing track pants… I think Jack probably only wears those when he’s training.

Of course I could embarrass the lad by posting a photo of him in his Onesie – complete with Tiger ears:-)

  2. I can notice a definite difference between the two boys…Jack’s pants are almost off, GW’s are not! Showing the age difference there;D

  3. Lol, Sonya, I have several girl-friends who’ve swanned through life without ever giving in to the urge to cook. Has done them no harm at all!!

Personally, I’m with you in the cleaning department. Give me a man with a mop and bucket and I’m happy. GW invested in a couple of roomba robots to do the vacuuming – I do love their triumphant little song when they’ve finished the floors and head home to their docks:-)

  4. Amazing isn’t it, Sandy.

A caring soul is another pre-requisite for a hero and if it’s hidden then the heroine will just have to work extra hard to uncover it!

  5. The ability to cook is essential for me, because I canโ€™t do it! I seriously cannot make toast without at least one disaster!

I might be a bit of a girly girl, but I cannot do anything a girl is supposed to be good at! Even my attempts at cleaning usually end with something being broken. So I definitely need a hero who can do that stuff.

  6. Will you check out the identical grins and identical stance!

Cooking is not part of the criteria for my heroes. Having a caring soul, even if it’s well hidden, is. ๐Ÿ™‚

    Hi, Jack! ๐Ÿ™‚

  7. Oh indeed, Shannon!

Hope you had a fabulous Christmas and New Year! Are you going to the ARRA dinner in Feb? If so, look forward to catching up with you!

  8. So true, my darling, so true:-) Now if he could just run as fast as you it would be a fine thing!!

(And I win the bet – he was sure you’d never find your way to the blog!!!)

  9. Gorgeous photo of them cooking together Helene! And when I come to think about it, most of my hero’s can cook better than the heroine. Life imitating art definitely for me ๐Ÿ™‚

  10. It was a little uncanny, Cath, seeing them together ๐Ÿ™‚ Their striped co-ordinated shirts were purely accidental but may say something about similar tastes in fashion – although Jack is infinitely more cool!!

  11. Gosh, they could be father and son in that cooking photo they look so alike. That’s a great photo, Helene ๐Ÿ™‚
