Fly, be free
Shattered Sky has been released. We had a fabulous party at Glaskins Gallery on Friday night. Garry, Lyn, Jason, Karen and Chrissie were wonderful hosts, as they were last year. Kerstin and Lexi from Collins Booksellers at Smithfield set up a lovely display of Shattered Sky and Wings of Fear (Border Watch). Chris Chua’s beautiful Continue reading
Love is in the air
Love is in the air and I’m guilty of mistreating John Paul Young’s song lyrics… (He’s no relation by the way!) Life is settling down again after Yasi. Think I may even have a slight hang-over this morning from drinking too much champagne with friends last night to celebrate being alive and well… (Oh and Chinese New Year – I’m a rabbit so this is MY year!) For me this cyclone has been a very different Continue reading
Pick up the phone
Life goes on. If we use Cyclone Larry as a yardstick then we can expect Yasi’s clean up to take longer than five years. During Larry’s aftermath the authorities had to build temporary accommodation to house all the tradesmen required to put Innisfail back together again. This time round the damage is more widespread and Continue reading
Just when we thought it was over
Yasi’s tail had the sting. This afternoon we had 140 millimetres of rain in three hours. The street turned into a raging torrent. The gutters on the house behind were full of storm debris and so were ours. The water overflowed, filled their yard, and then ours. It took us two hours to clean the Continue reading
Aftermath
The high tide this morning meant there was a likelihood of some low-level flooding in Cairns. I believe Machans Beach saw water over its rock wall. At Trinity the waves were chaotic, but they only delivered sand higher up the beaches. I think the Life Guard Hut will still be there tomorrow 🙂 Vasey Esplanade Continue reading
And the sun rises after Yasi
Trinity Beach seems to have survived Cyclone Yasi with minimal damage. There’s a lot of vegetation down, some awnings missing, broken fences and debris everywhere, but the sea hasn’t inundated any of the low lying areas. We still have power and, more amazingly, phone and internet. Friends higher up the hill slopes of Trinity Beach Continue reading
